ESSAY 20
Increasing the price
of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems. To
what extent do you agree or disagree? What other measures do you think might be
effective?
There is a problem in most developing countries in terms of
traffic and pollution particularly in the heart of its metropolitan cities. It
is argued that the best way to solve this problem is by having the petrol fare
to be increased to discourage people from using cars as the primary method of
transportation. However, other options can be taken to solve this issue.
The first alternative that can be offered as a solution is
to provide good and reliable public transportation for the citizen. If there
are many public transportation available, and if they are punctual, then people
can reduce their use of private cars because it is more advantageous to use
public transportation.
The second method that can be tried is taxing the main road
that usually becomes the source of a traffic jam. The idea is to limit the
number of private cars entering this part of the city. Hence, when there is
less traffic, there will be less pollution.
There is an opinion that other types of fuels are less
damaging toward the environment. Electric cars and hybrid cars have been
developed for quite some time now and manufacturers such as Tesla and Toyota
along with other big names in the automotive industry are racing to develop
these environmentally friendly cars.
To sum up, I believe when petrol price is increased, it will
trigger a domino effect and all other prices of goods will soar, too.
Therefore, I simply disagree to view it as the best solution for traffic and
pollution issues as there are other measures worth trying in the form of public
transportation, road tax, and alternative fuels.
