Can you describe your
town or village?
Well, I live in Tambun area in bekasi timur. It is one of
the satellite cities of Jakarta, Indonesian capital, so many people live here
and they work in Jakarta. So they commute every day to Jakarta using buses or
trains. The city is quite industrial I have to say, there are lots of factories
here, and most people work as factory workers or labors. It is so hot and the
traffic is so bad, it even makes people from other cities hesitate to visit
Bekasi.
How important is
tourism in your town/village? why and why not?
It is not important at all. Bekasi is an industrial city so
the main point in this city is factory and obviously there is not a single
place interesting enough to attract tourist to come to this poorly planned
city. Nothing special whatsoever.
What places would you
recommended people to visit in your town/village?
There is nothing extremely interesting or rare that you can
visit in Bekasi so to say. Well, there are some malls but I bet every town has
its own malls. So malls are nothing special. I would recommend people to visit
Bekasi in order to feel more grateful, luckier and fortunate about their own
cities. Once you had stepped your foot around here you will miss your hometown
so badly.
What festivals take
place in your local area?
Nothing. Bekasi people are not very festive people. We don’t
go out celebrating stuff and go holding hands together. We are labors and hard
workers. Our day-to-day life is so hard and difficult we don’t have any time
spare to spend playing around doing something festive which is pretty useless
considering you can use that time to earn money.

Describe a holiday

I went to Palembang several months ago, it is the capital of
South Sumatra. I went there to visit my family and my girlfriend. Well, I
visited several places where my family took me. The Ampera Bridge, The Kemaro
Island, The Cinde Traditional Market, The malls and lots of restaurants. It was
an extraordinary culinary holiday for my family. We ate lots of traditional
foods and took lots of photographs before we ate the food. Here are some of the
food: Pempek, Es Kacang Merah, Model, Tekwan, Burgo, Laksan, Celimpungan, Kapal
Selam, Lenggang, Pindang, and Durians ..well so many types of things you can
put in your mouth and savor it for the wonderful taste. Just make sure to bring
a suitcase full of money, if you ever go to Palembang, because if the food is a
perfect match for your preference, you will want to eat more and more ..

My idea of a perfect holiday is a holiday without any
disturbance from anyone, and a holiday time that I get to spend only with my
wife. So it’s like a second honeymoon getaway, haha .. I have planned it for so
long, but never have the chance to realize the plan. Well, let’s say the place
… mmm I think it should be Kampung Sampireun in West Java, we will go there by
car of course, and we will use the wooden boat to reach the cottage or the
hotel room. This will be perfect because we can escape the city and the gadget
world and we will enjoy the presence of each other and think again about all
the love we’ve made and shared from the moment we first met up to this day. I
think everyone should get to a place only with their spouse and forget about
the world for a while.

Well, as I grew up in the village in Palembang, I stayed
near river and sometimes we would catch what is called in Indonesian, kerang
sungai or remis … so this may equal to mussels in English. It is quite easy to
do this activity to become a fishmonger by yourself, just prepare a bucket and
maybe a glove, and make sure you put on a nice boot before you get into the
water if you’re afraid that something may cut your feet. I always go barefoot
when I catch the mussels though. They are usually hiding behind certain rocks.
I would recommend to catch only the one that is quite big, maybe the same size
of your thumb. I enjoy this activity mainly because mussels are really
delicious, though I hate the cleaning the mussels part, the cooking and the
eating part is the real reason why we do this activity.

Water Sport
What water sports are
popular among young people?
People like, surfing, wakeboarding, swimming, rafting,
diving, snorkeling, kayaking, jetskiing, and free diving. Well there are so
many water sports you can do. Young people mostly like anything trendy and
cool, and basically most of these water sports are quite cool and stylish. If
you do this, you get the image of an athletic person or at the very least a
healthy young person who enjoy his / her life.
How are sports like
surfing and swimming different?
Surfing and swimming. Surfing takes place in the sea near
the beach and there needs to be waves to do it. And you need a surfing board,
gear, clothing and accessories. You gotta to do it right. There is a chance you
may hurt yourself if you are a beginner, and surfing isn’t particularly easy
for beginner. You need to watch RIDE, a movie of Helen Hunt to see how someone
tried surfing for the first time. Swimming is different, it is very simple,
just dive into the pool and move your hands and legs accordingly. Surfing is a
lifestyle, swimming on the other hand.. not so much.
why do some people
not enjoy water sport?
Perhaps they are afraid of water or sun. Swimming in the hot
sun, would cause your skin to burn. If you are exposed for quite some time, you
will have a risk of skin cancer. So there’s that. Some beaches are not quite
safe. There might be things like jellyfish or sea urchin, or sea snake. And
there’s that too. However, the real reason is yourself. If you’re not an
outdoor person, you won’t enjoy being in the open for so long.
Attitudes to water
What activities do
children enjoy in or around water?
Children like playing games in the swimming pool. Games such
as Mermaid Races, Marcopolo, Pingpong, treasure hunt etc. In the beach they may
want to build a sandcastle, play kites, or collect sea shells. These activities
are of great fun, but it is important that parents keep their eye on the
children all the time when they’re playing.
How does a child’s
attitude to water differ from adults?
Well, a child does not really know or put the dangers into
consideration when they are in the water. So they really welcome the water and
it is a good thing. For adults, water can be an interesting place, but they
also know that there are certain risks. I remember when I was a kid, I jumped
from the height to the pool, though I was never really a good swimmer. It was
so dangerous now that I think of it. As an adult, I wouldn’t do the same thing.
Why do some adults
take part in dangerous water sports?
There is this thing called Adrenaline Hunter which puts you
face to face with extreme variety of sports. Dangerous water sports are part of
it. You want to challenge yourself and as the result you will feel very excited
when you put your life in danger. Well, of course, there are safety measures
involved. However, the risk is also real. So, some adults may really enjoy this
activity to escape their boring life. It makes you feel like this kind of experience
is what make life meaningful.
